We all have trillions of bacteria living in our large intestine. These help us with many bodily functions and are essential for good health.
Problems arise when these bacteria move into the small intestine. This affects the small intestine’s ability to do the important work of digesting and absorbing nutrients, leading to a wide variety of symptoms.
For this test, you simply drink a sugary solution and collect breath samples at regular intervals over three hours. The gas found in your breath allow us to see whether there are bacteria in your small intestine and, if so, what type they are.

The recommendations are appropriate for x, y, z symptoms, while dealing with any underlying imbalances, via food, lifestyle and supplement changes.
Your results
Please find your Healthpath SIBO report attached and the original results from the laboratory.

Your results have come back positive for SIBO, based on your hydrogen levels.

Your results have come back negative for SIBO, based on your hydrogen levels.

Your results have come back positive for methane. Methane has been associated with constipation and IBS in the research, but this is not always the case.
Your results have come back negative, but the shape of your graph indicates possible microbial imbalance.
Even though these results are negative, I can create a beneficial program for you, based on your symptoms. It can often be the case that rather than an overgrowth, there may simply be an imbalance in the bacteria. This may be happening in the small or the large intestine - the SIBO breath test only looks at the small intestine.
When assessing your results, we expect to see a rise in hydrogen in the final hour of the test. This is when the lactulose solution you drank enters the large intestine and is fermented by the bacteria there.
As you can see, your results don’t show this rise in hydrogen. Possible reasons for this are:

The lactulose did not enter the large intestine during the ‘normal’ time period. This would typically manifest as severe constipation.

The lactulose travelled through the intestines excessively quickly, resulting in a lack of fermentation. This would typically manifest as severe diarrhoea.
-
Not much hydrogen was produced. This can occur if you’ve recently taken a course of antibiotics or anti-microbials.

Instead of hydrogen, hydrogen sulphide may have been produced. Symptoms associated with this include bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhoea or constipation (or fluctuation between the two) and eggy-smelling gas.
There is 1 sample missing in your results due to low levels of carbon dioxide in one of your sample tubes. This does not affect the interpretation of your test.

I recommend that you follow this program for 8 - 12 weeks, using the Modified Healthpath plate first, changing gradually to the Healthpath plate from 6-8 weeks onwards.

It would be worth considering including 2 tablespoons of ground flaxseeds and/or 2 kiwi fruit (with skin) each day. We find these very helpful additions when looking to improve frequency of bowel movements.
