Your gut is an ecosystem. It contains trillions of bacteria (your ‘gut microbiome’), which play a role in your bodily functions. When your gut microbiome is out of balance, we call it dysbiosis, and it can contribute to everything from bloating to autoimmune conditions.

[prac_summary] => Being able to understand both the microbiome and the functional capacity of someone's digestive system, makes this report especially effective because it allows for very personalised and effective lifestyle strategies. Useful for those with mild to occasional IBS symptoms, our Essential Gut Health test uses a combination of 16s rRNA sequencing, qPCR testing and culturing to give comprehensive and extensive insight into gut health, via a non-invasive stool sample.

As our most accessible gut test, it analyses the most essential markers, such as candida and secretory IgA, needed for a basic but accurate overview of your gut health.

Congratulations on getting to this stage.

I have reviewed your test results, and summarised the key findings below.

I have also included a video for you above, please watch this to understand more about your results.

Key findings

Keep in mind that the microbiome is a new and complex area of science. Please do not see ‘out-of-range’ markers as a diagnosis, instead see them as areas to focus on a particular aspect of health.

Your in-range markers include:

  1. A good stool pH - helps prevent pathogenic (unfriendly) bacteria from colonising the colon

  2. Good microbiome diversity - one of the most important metrics of gut health

  3. Good levels of butyrate-producing bacteria - which helps maintain a healthy gut wall

  4. Normal levels of potentially pathogenic (unfriendly) bacteria

  5. Normal levels of candida

  6. No parasitic infections

  7. Normal pancreatic elastase (indicating normal production of digestive enzymes)

  8. Normal calprotectin (indicating no inflammation)

  9. Normal zonulin (indicating no leaky gut)

  10. Negative for H Pylori (a bacteria that colonises the stomach)

Your out-of-range markers include:

  1. An acidic stool pH - this may indicate carbohydrate maldigestion

  2. An alkaline stool pH - potentially related to low levels of Bifidobacteria and butyrate-producing (friendly) bacteria

  3. Low microbiome diversity

  4. A high dysbiosis index - indicating a high level of imbalance in the microbiome

  5. Low levels of Bifidobacteria and key butyrate-producing (friendly) bacteria

  6. Elevated levels of potentially pathogenic (unfriendly) bacteria

  7. Elevated levels of hydrogen sulphide-producing bacteria - often resulting in high levels of flatulence

  8. High levels of histamine-producing bacteria - often associated with diarrhoea and abdominal pain

  9. High levels of methanobrevibacter - often associated with constipation

  10. High levels of candida

  11. Positive for the parasite Blastocystis hominis. There are several subtypes of this organism, not all of which need addressing.

  12. Positive for the parasite Dientamoeba fragilis.

  13. High secretory IgA - indicating immune activity

  14. Low secretory IgA - indicating compromised immunity in the gut

  15. Low pancreatic elastase - indicating low production of digestive enzymes from the pancreas

  16. Elevated calprotectin - indicating inflammation

  17. Elevated zonulin - indicating leaky gut

  18. Positive for H Pylori - a bacteria that colonises the stomach

  19. High levels of nitrogen - which may indicate protein malabsorption

  20. High levels of fat - which may indicate fat malabsorption

  21. High levels of sugar - which may indicate carbohydrate malabsorption

  22. High levels of water in the stool - which may indicate fast transit through the digestive system (this may present as diarrhoea, but doesn’t always)

  23. Low levels of water in the stool - which may indicate slow transit through the digestive system (this may present as constipation, but doesn’t always)

To learn more about your markers, visit your ‘In range’ and ‘Out of range’ tabs in your results.

We recommend informing your GP about the low pancreatic elastase. However this can often be the results of a bacterial imbalance in the small intestine.

We recommend informing your GP about the elevated Calprotectin marker

How it works

Collection method: Stool test

Turnaround time: 14 working days

For this test, you provide a small sample of your stool (poo). This is sent to a lab, where it’s analysed for bacteria, yeasts, candidas and other biomarkers that indicate intestinal health.

Based on this information, you’ll receive personalised dietary and lifestyle advice to optimise your gut health—and support your health as a whole.

  1. Eat a normal diet for one week before the test.
  2. Collect a stool sample with the stool collector.
  3. Follow the instructions to send your sample.
  4. Receive in-depth results about your gut health.

Absolutely chuffed I found healthpath. First of all their owner has been through some health issues and then healed himself so it's kinda a mission based company. Also, finally there is a company out there that measures your gut health in a easy and accessible way. The NHS wouldn't even run most of these tests unfortunately. So these guys are really onto something. There are soooo many people out there who should do these tests and look after their health. I am glad I am one of them!

Frequently asked questions

I don’t have any gut issues. Do I need to take this test?

Our gut does far more than digest our food. Amongst many other things, it plays a role in making our neurotransmitters, it influences our hormones and it’s also home to most of our immune system. What this means is that if something isn’t right in the gut, it can show up in a number of ways—headaches, skin conditions, joint pain and more. To look at it another way: there are very few conditions that can’t be helped by addressing the gut. If you recognise yourself in any of the symptoms listed above, it may be worth taking the test.

Who should take this test?

This test provides information that simply can’t be gathered from a questionnaire or consultation, which means it could prove insightful for anyone. It’s particularly helpful for those suffering from digestive complaints, skin conditions and autoimmune diseases, and any other symptoms listed above.

Is this test worth the money?

We certainly think so. At Healthpath, we value evidence and trust—and this applies to all our products. Unless something can genuinely help you, we have no interest in offering it. We understand it can seem strange to pay for health tests (especially in the UK), but we also think that your health is one of the most valuable investments you can make.

Do you ship outside the UK?

At the moment we only ship to UK addresses. If you have a special request, please feel free to get in touch.

What’s in the test kit?

1 x test instructions
1 x request form
1 x stool sample preparation system
2 x transport tubes
1 x shipping bag

How do I take this test?

You can download full instructions here.

Do I need to stop taking supplements or medications before taking this test?

You must not stop any medications in order to take this test. You should stop taking probiotics three days before taking the test, but other common supplements are unlikely to affect the results.

Is there anything I need to do before taking this test?

You must follow your normal diet a week before taking the test, as any dramatic changes in diet will lead to skewed results. You must also plan to take the test on Monday–Wednesday, as the samples can only be posted back to the lab on these days. For more information, you can download the test instructions here.

What should I do if I have a question or an issue with taking my sample?

If you have any questions or issues with taking your sample according to the instructions provided, it is important you contact us before you send your sample to the lab.

Healthpath cannot guarantee to intercept your sample once it arrives at the lab and so it may still be processed.

Contact us on

How long will it take to get my results?

Your results will be posted on your online account two weeks after you return your samples (sometimes sooner). You’ll receive an email notification when your results are ready.

How do I view my results?

Simply log in to your Healthpath account here and click ‘Tests’. You’ll be able to access your results and personalised recommendations two weeks after returning your samples (sometimes sooner).

How will I know what my results mean?

All your results data is accompanied by clear, jargon-free explanations. Our practitioners also review all results, providing personalised recommendations that are easy-to-follow and specific to you.

Why can’t I get this through my GP?

Functional tests are highly specialised and currently not offered through the NHS. At present, the only option is to pay for them privately. We appreciate you want to spend your money wisely, which is why we only offer tests that are genuinely helpful.

Can I claim the cost of the test on my private health insurance?

It’s possible, though you’ll need to check the details of your insurance to see what’s included.

Can I buy a test for my child?

We do offer tests for children, but it’s important you work with a practitioner experienced in working with children.

Personalised, 1 to 1 support with a practitioner is safer and more effective when analysing test results for children and providing appropriate advice.

It is important to reach out to our team to discuss the test before you purchase.
