Learning how your gut affects your mood can be a real turning point, especially if you have struggled with digestive symptoms and low mood or anxiety at the same time. The relationship runs in both directions. Your gut can shape how you feel, and how you feel can shape your gut.

This is a big topic, and the science is moving quickly. So this guide goes a little deeper than most. We will walk through the routes that carry signals between your gut and your brain, the messengers involved, and what the strongest studies really show. We will also be honest about the limits of the evidence, because that matters. By the end, you should have a clear, grounded picture — and some gentle, practical places to start.

What is the gut-brain axis?

The gut-brain axis is the two-way communication network that links your digestive system and your brain — a constant flow of signals passing between the two [1]. It is not a single wire. It is more like several phone lines running at once, each carrying a different kind of message.

The vagus nerve. This is the main neural route: a large nerve that carries signals from your gut up to your brain, and messages from your brain back down to your gut [1]. Most of its traffic actually travels gut to brain, which tells you how much your brain wants to know about what is happening below.

Your “second brain”. Your gut has its own dense web of nerves, called the enteric nervous system. It holds hundreds of millions of nerve cells and can manage many jobs on its own, such as moving food along. This is why it is sometimes nicknamed the second brain.

The hormonal route. Your gut and brain also talk through hormones. The clearest example is the stress system, known as the HPA axis, which releases the stress hormone cortisol [6]. We will come back to this, because it is central to how mood affects the gut.

The immune route. Much of your immune system sits in and around your gut. Immune signals, including markers of inflammation, can travel to the brain and influence how you feel [3].

The microbiome. Then there is your microbiome — the community of trillions of bacteria that live in your gut. These microbes send chemical messages that can reach the brain, and they help shape how you respond to stress [3]. A landmark review by two leading researchers, John Cryan and Ted Dinan, brought these threads together and described a “microbiota-gut-brain axis” — the idea that your microbes are active partners in this conversation, not bystanders [9].

When we talk about the gut and mood, this whole network is what we mean. No single route acts alone. They overlap and influence one another, which is part of what makes this science both fascinating and hard to pin down.

How does your gut affect your mood?

Your gut influences your mood through several overlapping routes. It produces most of your body’s serotonin. Its bacteria make calming messengers such as GABA. Those bacteria also create short-chain fatty acids that support gut-brain signalling. And, through inflammation, your gut can quietly shift the raw materials your body uses to build mood chemicals.

In short, the main routes are:

  • Serotonin — most of it is made in the gut, though it acts mainly within the gut rather than topping up the brain directly.
  • GABA and other bacterial messengers — some gut bacteria make calming neurotransmitters.
  • Short-chain fatty acids — produced when bacteria ferment fibre, and important for gut-brain signalling.
  • Inflammation and the tryptophan crossroads — the route that can divert serotonin’s raw material.

Let us take each in turn.

Serotonin: made in the gut, but not a shortcut to the brain

Serotonin is a chemical messenger that helps regulate mood, sleep and digestion, and most of it is made in your gut. Specialised cells in the gut lining, called enterochromaffin cells, produce up to 95% of the body’s serotonin [2]. It is built from an amino acid called tryptophan, which comes from the food you eat.

Here is an important detail that is often missed. The serotonin made in your gut does not simply travel up and top up the levels in your brain. Serotonin cannot easily cross from the bloodstream into the brain. Instead, gut serotonin acts mostly within the gut itself, helping to control movement and sensation, and it passes signals to the brain along indirect routes, such as the vagus nerve [1].

So a healthy gut is not a shortcut to more brain serotonin. It is one part of a much bigger conversation. This nuance matters, because you may see bold claims online that “fixing your gut” will flood your brain with serotonin. That is not how the biology works, and it is worth being clear-eyed about it.

GABA, psychobiotics and other bacterial messengers

Some gut bacteria can make GABA, a messenger that helps calm the nervous system, and strains of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium are among them [4]. Bacteria that may influence mood in this way are sometimes called psychobiotics.

There is a tantalising human clue here. In one of the largest population studies of its kind, researchers found that the microbes’ potential to produce GABA was linked to differences in depression [11]. That is a long way from proof, but it points to the microbiome doing something meaningful with these calming chemicals. The same study also found that the microbial potential to make a dopamine metabolite tracked with better mental quality of life — a hint that GABA is not the only mood-relevant chemistry the microbiome touches [11].

Short-chain fatty acids: the fibre connection

When bacteria break down the fibre in your food, they produce helpful compounds called short-chain fatty acids. These feed the cells of the gut lining, help keep the gut barrier strong, and support the wider gut-brain signalling network [7]. This is one of the clearest reasons why fibre keeps coming up whenever gut and mood are discussed. No fibre, fewer short-chain fatty acids. The tryptophan crossroads: serotonin or inflammation

Tryptophan can take one of two paths in the body — one leads to serotonin, the other leads away from it — and inflammation helps decide which. This is one of the most active areas of research, and it matters because it offers a route from gut health to mood that does not depend on serotonin reaching the brain at all.

Remember that serotonin is built from tryptophan. One path turns tryptophan into serotonin. Another path, called the kynurenine pathway, leads away from serotonin altogether. Which path tryptophan takes depends partly on inflammation. When the body is dealing with ongoing, low-grade inflammation, an enzyme with the tongue-twisting name indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase becomes more active. This enzyme pulls tryptophan down the kynurenine path and away from serotonin production [16].

The result is twofold. There is less tryptophan available to make serotonin. And the kynurenine path can produce compounds that affect the brain in their own right [16]. Because so much inflammation begins in the gut, and because the gut lining and microbiome help regulate inflammation, this gives us a plausible route from gut health to mood. It is still being worked out, but it helps explain why “gut, inflammation and mood” so often appear in the same sentence.

What large human studies show about diversity

Large human studies have linked specific gut bacteria to mood. Certain butyrate-producing bacteria, including Faecalibacterium and Coprococcus, are consistently associated with higher quality of life, while Coprococcus and Dialister are reduced in people with depression [11].

For years, most of this kind of research was done in animals. That has been changing. In one of the biggest human studies, scientists analysed the gut bacteria of more than a thousand people in Belgium, then checked their findings against a separate group of over a thousand people in the Netherlands [11]. The depletion of Coprococcus and Dialister in people with depression held even after accounting for the effects of antidepressants [11].

But the researchers were careful, and so should we be. These are correlations. They cannot tell us whether the missing bacteria helped cause the low mood, or whether the low mood, and everything that travels with it, changed the bacteria. We will return to this question, because it sits at the heart of the whole field.

How does your mood affect your gut?

Your mind shapes your gut just as surely as your gut shapes your mind — through stress hormones, changes in gut sensitivity, and effects that may reach the bacteria themselves. Here is how.

The stress response and the HPA axis

When you feel stressed or anxious, your body switches on its stress response, driven partly by the HPA axis, which releases cortisol. This can change how quickly food moves through your gut, how sensitive your gut feels, and how well the gut lining holds together [6].

That is why so many people notice their tummy reacting to stress. A nervous stomach before an exam or a difficult conversation is this system in action. In the short term it is completely normal. It is when the stress becomes constant that the effects can add up.

IBS: a disorder of gut-brain interaction

Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, is the clearest everyday example of mood and gut affecting each other. In fact, the way doctors describe IBS has shifted: it is now often framed as a disorder of gut-brain interaction, which captures the idea that the gut and brain are not communicating smoothly, even though the gut itself looks structurally normal [2].

IBS is often described as stress-sensitive. Stress does not cause IBS on its own, but it can trigger flare-ups and make symptoms feel worse [5]. The NHS notes that IBS symptoms can worsen during times of stress [18]. Many people with IBS notice their symptoms rise and fall with their mood, which is exactly what you would expect from a two-way system.

Stress and your bacteria

Stress may reach even further, down to the bacteria themselves. Ongoing stress may lower the variety of bacteria in your gut over time [5]. And since a varied microbiome is generally a sign of a resilient one, that is a route by which a stressful period could leave a mark on your gut that outlasts the stress itself.

How strong is the evidence, really?

The evidence is strongest in animals, promising in small human trials, and mostly correlational in large human studies. The gut-mood story is exciting, and it is easy to get carried away — so it helps to sort the evidence into what is strong, what is promising, and what is still uncertain.

What animal studies show

Some of the most eye-catching findings come from mice raised in sterile conditions, with no gut bacteria at all. These germ-free mice show an exaggerated stress response, with higher levels of stress hormones when challenged. Remarkably, giving them a single strain of Bifidobacterium early in life brought that stress response back towards normal [10].

Studies like this are powerful because they can show cause and effect. Change the bacteria, and the behaviour changes. But mice are not people, and a sterile laboratory is nothing like real life. So these findings are best seen as clues about what might be possible, not proof of what happens in humans [9].

What human studies show

Human evidence is harder to gather, but it is growing. In one carefully designed study, healthy women ate a fermented milk product containing probiotics twice a day for four weeks. Brain scans afterwards showed changes in the activity of brain regions involved in processing emotion, compared with women who did not have the product [12]. It was a small study, and the effect was subtle, but it was one of the first signs that changing the gut could shift brain activity in people.

In another study, healthy volunteers took a prebiotic fibre for three weeks. Those on one particular prebiotic showed a lower morning cortisol response and paid less attention to negative information in a computer task, compared with placebo [13]. Since people who are anxious tend to focus more on negative cues, this hinted that feeding the gut bacteria might nudge the way we process the world.

The honest bottom line on cause and effect

Most human research still shows association, not proof of cause. Researchers have noticed a clear and consistent pattern: people with anxiety or depression often have a different balance of gut bacteria compared with people who do not [3]. Animal studies suggest the bacteria can be a genuine cause of behaviour change. Small human trials suggest the gut can influence the brain. But mood is shaped by many things at once [11].

None of this means the link is not real. It means the science is still filling in the details. The practical takeaway is reassuring rather than deflating: looking after your gut is very likely to be part of looking after your mood, even if it is not the whole story and not a stand-alone answer.

Can changing your diet really change how you feel?

This is where the research becomes genuinely encouraging, because here we do have controlled trials in people.

In one well-known trial, known as the SMILES trial, adults with major depression who improved the quality of their diet saw a greater reduction in their symptoms than a comparison group who received social support [8]. The diet was based on a Mediterranean pattern, rich in vegetables, wholegrains, legumes, fish and olive oil.

One trial is never the whole picture. So it helps that a later review pulled together the results of many dietary trials at once. It found that improving the diet led to a small but real reduction in symptoms of depression across studies [15]. The effect was modest, and stronger for depression than for anxiety, but it held up even in the higher-quality trials.

It is worth keeping this in proportion. Food is only part of the picture, and diet is not a replacement for medical care. Even so, the direction is positive: the way you eat may support the way you feel, and that is within your control.

Fibre and fermented foods seem to be part of the reason. Fibre is a type of prebiotic that feeds your gut bacteria, supporting the microbes that make short-chain fatty acids. Fermented foods can add helpful bacteria and compounds to the mix [7]. In other words, the diets that seem to support mood are also the diets that feed a healthy microbiome. That overlap is unlikely to be a coincidence.

Do probiotics and prebiotics help mood?

On balance, probiotics show a small benefit for symptoms of low mood and anxiety — larger in people with a diagnosis — while prebiotics on their own show little clear effect. They are not a treatment for anxiety or depression, but for some people they may play a modest supporting role.

The idea makes sense. If certain bacteria are linked with better mood, perhaps supplementing them could help. Researchers have tested this in dozens of trials, and pooled the results.

One large review of controlled trials found that probiotics produced a small but statistically significant improvement in both depression and anxiety, while prebiotics on their own did not clearly outperform placebo [14]. Importantly, the benefit was larger in people who actually had a diagnosis or were under real stress, and smaller in the general population [14].

More recent reviews focusing only on people with a clinical diagnosis have reported larger effects again, though the authors are careful to note that trials are often short and vary a great deal in the strains and doses used [17]. That variation is a real limitation. A “probiotic” is not one thing. Different strains do different jobs, and a result from one product does not automatically apply to another.

So where does that leave you? Probiotics are not a treatment for anxiety or depression, and they are not a substitute for professional care. But for some people they may offer a modest supportive role, especially alongside the wider foundations of diet, sleep, movement and stress care. If you want to try them, it is sensible to give a specific product a fair trial of a few weeks and to notice honestly whether it helps.

How can you support the gut-mood connection?

You do not need a dramatic overhaul. Small, steady changes tend to work best, and they happen to support both your gut and your mood at the same time. Here are some gentle places to start.

Eat a wide range of plants. Aim for variety across the week — vegetables, fruit, wholegrains, beans, nuts and seeds. Variety feeds a more diverse microbiome, and diversity is one of the best signs of gut health [7]. Foods often highlighted in this research include oily fish, leafy greens, wholegrains, legumes, nuts and olive oil — the same building blocks as a Mediterranean-style diet [8].

Add some fermented foods. Live yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut and kimchi can be easy additions to meals you already enjoy [7]. Start small and build up, so your gut has time to adjust.

Protect your sleep. Poor sleep and stress often travel together, and both influence the gut-brain system. A steady sleep routine is a practical, low-cost way to support the whole picture.

Move your body regularly. Regular, moderate activity is a well-established part of looking after both mood and digestion, and it does not need to be intense — a daily walk counts.

Calm your nervous system. Slow breathing, time outdoors and moments of rest can help engage the vagus nerve — the same nerve that links your gut and brain [1]. This is not a quick trick. It is a daily practice that gently shifts your body out of a constant stress state.

Feed the calm side of the tryptophan crossroads. Since ongoing inflammation can pull tryptophan away from serotonin, the same anti-inflammatory habits above — plants, fibre, good sleep, less chronic stress — may help keep that crossroads pointing in a helpful direction [16].

A note if you have IBS. Be cautious with high-fibre and inulin-rich foods, such as onions, garlic, leeks, chicory root and artichoke, and with fermented foods. For some people with IBS, these fermentable fibres can worsen bloating, wind and other symptoms. Introduce them slowly, notice how you respond, and consider getting personalised guidance rather than following general advice.

When to see your GP

Most gut and mood symptoms are not dangerous, but some warrant a professional review. Please speak to your GP if you notice any of the following:

  • A persistent change in your bowel habits lasting three weeks or more
  • Blood in your stool, or bleeding from your back passage
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • A swelling or lump in your stomach or back passage
  • Signs of anaemia, such as unusual tiredness or breathlessness
  • Persistent low mood or anxiety that is affecting your daily life

The NHS advises seeing your GP for IBS-type symptoms so that other conditions can be ruled out, and specifically flags unexplained weight loss, a lump or swelling, bleeding from the back passage and signs of anaemia as reasons to see your GP promptly [18]. Does poor gut health cause depression?

Not exactly. Research shows a strong and consistent link between gut health and mood, but a link is not the same as proof of cause [3].
