Skin Conditions

Skin conditions can reflect something that’s going on inside.

What is it?

Skin conditions are incredibly common. In fact, it’s estimated that 80% of people have acne at some point in their life—and there are a host of other skin disorders that are commonly treated as symptoms.

These include eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, melasma, hives, dandruff and more. These may all show up on the outside, but they often indicate something inside is out of balance.

Skin conditions can be mildly irritating—or they can be incredibly distressing. As well as the discomfort of the condition itself, it’s known that skin conditions can take a significant psychological toll on the sufferer.

Why does it happen?

There are many factors that influence the health and integrity of your skin. Some of these include:

Inflammation.

This can result from both external factors, such as irritating soaps, or internal threats, such as food intolerances. Stress can be inflammatory too.

Dysbiosis.

Both our gut and our skin have their own microbiome. We need both these microbiomes to be robust and healthy, so they can protect us against microorganisms that can harm healthy skin.

Oxidative stress.

As our external barrier, the skin is the first line of defence against assaults such as pollution and UV radiation. Poor dietary habits can also contribute to oxidative stress.

Blood-sugar imbalances.

Eating too much sugar can not only make our skin oilier and more acne-prone, but it can also speed up the ageing process.

Nutritional deficiencies.

If we don’t eat enough of certain foods or nutrients, this can affect our skin over time. It can also be a sign that we’re not digesting our food properly.

Hormonal imbalances.

Many hormones play a role in the health of our skin. If we have too much or too little of one hormone, it can start a domino effect that shows up in our complexion.

Amazing company. They look at you as an individual. This is the way medicine should be practiced, instead of just handing out things to plaster over your symptoms.

Leanne

What can I do about it?

Start with three simple steps:

01

Eat fermented foods daily.

This is a simple but effective way to support your gut microbiome, which has a positive effect on your skin. Good choices include sauerkraut and kimchi.

Taking probiotics
02

Balance your blood sugar.

Foods that quickly raise your blood sugar affect your hormones and contribute to inflammation. To balance your blood sugar, cut down on sweet and starchy foods, and fill up on protein, fibre and healthy fats instead.

Sugary foods
03

Keep a food diary.

If your skin condition is being triggered by a particular food, keeping a food and symptom diary will enable you to see any patterns.
