Well, it’s when your small intestine hosts more bacteria, both good and bad, than it should.
This bacterial overgrowth can lead to a whole host of uncomfortable and sometimes awkward symptoms, including bloating, abdominal pain, diarrohea, fatigue, and weakness.
The symptoms can go beyond just digestive issues, so SIBO is often overlooked as a possible culprit behind various health problems such as chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, roseacea, autoimmune diseases, psoriasis, osteoporosis, fatty liver, metabolic syndrome, restless legs, cystitis and more.
The good news is, there’s a simple way to check for it – a DIY breath test you can easily do at home.
There’s many SIBO tests on the market now, but the results aren’t always black and white.
And what’s even more important, is knowing how to take action to get rid of those symptoms and improve your health in the most effective way.
This is where Healthpath comes in.
Not only do we use a gold-standard test and methodology – which we also now supply to the NHS – our expert practitioners look at your symptoms, your health history and give you a bespoke health plan of action, so you can finally feel your best.
A path to a better, healthier you.
That’s why we’re called Healthpath, and why thousands of doctors & practitioners recommend us.
For this simple, at-home hydrogen methane breath test, you drink a sugary solution and collect breath samples over 2.5 hours. The type of gas found in your breath will reveal if you have bacteria where it shouldn’t be, and what type they are, to give you the insight you need.

Trying to find solutions to your gut health issues is complicated enough. On top of that, you’ve probably discovered that there are dozens of competing companies in this area – offering SIBO or other types of microbiome testing, with a wide range of features and prices.
We’d love to take a few moments to help you, to answer your questions or concerns, and to give you some genuine advice.
Yes, with a few caveats. We refer to SIBO as a condition for simplicity, but it’s technically a dysbiotic state in which there’s too much bacteria in the small intestine. For some people this can cause no symptoms at all, but for others it can contribute to a variety of symptoms. In this way, SIBO isn’t a condition in and of itself—but an imbalance that contributes to other diagnosable conditions. Having said this, SIBO is certainly something that’s detectable and treatable. The North American Consensus, which was written in 2017, defines the state and outlines the best way to test for it. You can read a copy of this consensus here.
The only way to be sure you have SIBO is to take a breath test. However, if you suffer from IBS, fibromyalgia or rosacea, you’re much more likely to have to condition. Other common SIBO symptoms are listed above.
Anyone suffering from IBS or fibromyalgia should take this SIBO test. This is because 84% of IBS cases are actually believed to be SIBO, while 77% of people with fibromyalgia also have SIBO. If you suffer from rosacea or digestive symptoms that haven’t responded to more common interventions, this test could be helpful for you too.

You must not stop any medications in order to take this SIBO test. Please speak to your GP first. If you’re currently taking antibiotics or herbal antimicrobials, wait 4 weeks after finishing the course of treatment before taking the test. We recommend avoiding taking probiotics for 48 hours before taking the test.
You should avoid high-fibre or slowly digesting foods for at least 24 hours before taking the test. You must also avoid all food 8–12 hours before taking the test. The whole testing process takes 2.5 hours, so you’ll need to make sure you can fit it into your day. Visit our help centre article to learn more about what to do before and during the test.
If you have any questions or issues with taking your sample according to the instructions provided, it is important you contact us before you send your sample to the lab.
Healthpath cannot guarantee to intercept your sample once it arrives at the lab and so it may still be processed.
