What is CFS?

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is best described as extreme tiredness. It can’t be explained by another underlying medical condition, and the fatigue doesn’t improve with rest. It often worsens with physical or mental activity.

Other symptoms that accompany CFS are sleep problems, headaches, joint and muscle pain, a sore throat and brain fog.

The cause of CFS is not yet fully understood. However, there are ways to investigate your individual triggers.

What causes CFS?

CFS is a complex condition. Here are a few things to consider:

Bacterial imbalance.

Altered gut bacteria, known as dysbiosis, has been linked to CFS.

Food sensitivities.

Eating foods to which we’re sensitive can activate the immune system, contributing to inflammation.

Adrenal function.

Altered adrenal function is caused by repeated physical and emotional stress. This has been linked to poor energy and fatigue.

Thyroid dysfunction.

Suboptimal levels of thyroid hormones are often observed in cases of CFS.

Infections and/or toxins.

Viruses, heavy metals and even mould can damage the mitochondria, the energy-producing factors of the cell. This leads to fatigue.

A poor diet.

Although this doesn’t cause CFS, excess sugar, processed foods and trans fats can worsen inflammatory processes in the body.
